piercing eyes

"The Karmapa sealed each moment with his imposing size and presence, and his piercing eyes which seem like the gaze of a garuda which never misses a single detail of the landscape beneath its vast perspective." no blog

"My great-grandmother could be quite wrathful. On several occasions, she set her will against the great terton---- she was stubborn enough to start a squabble.

He didn´t appreciate her drinking from a garuda claw that he had discover when reveling a terma.--"I didn´t go to the trouble of recovering this rare garuda craw for you to use as shot glass!"--- she: "it holds a drink really well! And thats i´m going to use it for!"

And she imediately poured herself a drink... (p.39)

Bringing happiness to others

Bringing happiness to others - thai tradition - full moon

"Celebrating Vesak also means making special efforts to bring happiness to the unfortunate like the aged, the handicapped and the sick. To this day, Buddhists will distribute gifts in cash and kind to various charitable homes throughout the country. Vesak is also a time for great joy and happiness, expressed not by pandering to one’s appetites but by concentrating on useful activities such as decorating and illuminating temples, painting and creating exquisite scenes from the life of the Buddha for public dissemination. Devout Buddhists also vie with one another to provide refreshments and vegetarian food to followers who visit the temple to pay homage to the Enlightened One."[wiki]

burma appeal

Shambhala Sun:"Dear Readers_At this time of great tragedy for the people of Burma, our friend and well-known Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield sends this request which we wish to share with you all."

An Open Appeal on Behalf of the People of Burma,

by Jack Kornfield

Dear Readers, At this time of great tragedy for the people of Burma, our friend and well-known Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield sends this request which we wish to share with you all.

Dear Dharma Friends, I want to ask you to consider help for the people of Burma. As you know the blessings of many of our Buddhist teachings have come from the tradition and generosity of the people of Burma. Now the devastating Cyclone Nargis has plunged an already impoverished nation into chaos. The most effective way to help that I know of is The Foundation for the People of Burma (FPB), a U.S. registered charity I support. The Foundation already has 70 staff and volunteers on the ground and are working to relieve suffering in sites across Burma right now, while most foreign aid workers are still waiting at the border for visas. Because FPB has worked in Burma for many years, it has been able to quickly mobilize its Burmese staff and partner networks to address emergency needs in target areas. To date, the in-country staff has mobilized to provide basic survival supplies, including water purification tablets, food, mosquito nets, tarps and rebuilding and sanitation supplies to thousands of people in Rangoon and targeted Irrawaddy Delta areas. They are organizing local medical teams and businessmen as well. Your tax-deductible contribution will enable the Foundation to continue this life-saving work, and will enable us to be there for the long process of rebuilding lives. If you can, please contribute now. Your gift will go directly to the affected population in the bowels of this disaster. Feel free to call or email the Foundation if you need more information. The website is http://www.foundationburma.org/ and the phone number in California is 415 217 7015. Thank you for your generosity. Jack Kornfield Spirit Rock Center Woodacre, California

Karmapa in usa 08

"This is His Holiness's first time out of India, his very first jet lag. He is only 22. If we are lucky, he will be experiencing it again and again in the coming years." more
segundo o NYT
"The 22-year-old living Buddha seemed joyfully aware to feel no jet lag whatsoever. So far. “Maybe tonight,” he said in English on Thursday. “But not yet.” He had just arrived at a Midtown hotel with his security detail after a 14-hour flight from New Delhi to Newark. Ugyen Trinley Dorje, 22, widely admired as an enlightened being, arrived in New York to start an 18-day American tour.
“It is the first time I’ve ever visited the United States, and it’s a bit like a dream,” said His Holiness, the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa Ugyen Trinley Dorje, one of the most important leaders in Tibetan Buddhism."
e acabou dizendo: The visit is a chance to “bring peace and happiness to the minds of sentient beings,” said the newly arrived Karmapa. Asked if he had a message for Americans, he answered, “Americans have a message for me.” He added, shrugging off gravitas with a twinkling eye, “I am here, and I’m having this new experience, and I’m open to what Americans have to tell me.”

Death, Intermediate State and Rebirth

"Immediately thereupon, the intermediate state begins – except for those reborn in the formless realms of infinite space, infinite consciousness, "nothingness" or peak of cyclic existence, for whom the new life begins immediately upon death. Those born within the realms of desire and form must pass through an intermediate state, during which a being has the form of the person as whom he or she is to be reborn. The intermediate being has all five senses, but also clairvoyance, unobstructiveness and an ability to arrive immediately wherever he or she wants. He or she sees other intermediate beings of his or her own type – hell-being, hungry ghost, animal, human, demigod or god – and can be seen by clairvoyants."
